Artist's Comments

[Update/Edit]
I just fixed some of the shading on the face in accordance with Slain-July's comments. It was a little abrupt, and I hadn't noticed it before, so cheers ;)

Oh, I also changed a little of the shading on her crotch, but wasn't as significant.
[/Update/Edit]

*phew crikey*

I have been working on this piece for AGES. Finally I have completed it.
Took me around 40ish hours in total, because there was a lot of experimentation going on as this is my first peice of this type. I was also using a mouse rather than a graphics tablet, so it took even longer than expected ;)

I would really appreciate comments on this peice. As it is my first (hopefully of many) of this kind, I would like to know where I could improve. Not in a case of "There's a black bit here that needs moving", but in a case of "Your brush strokes seem a little harsh, maybe do such and such" or whatever...

Neah, I should stop telling you how to comment :P

Please, comment how you want ;)

Time: 40ish Hours
Program: Adobe Photoshop
Method: Brush (Circular, max size 5, mostly 2)
Layers: Around 25

I think you did an awesome job, especially considering this was your first piece of this kind. And also because you were using a mouse. Neat idea, too. I love the wings. They just look so darn cool. :)

And you asked for something constructive, so here she goes: The shading on the face is a bit rough in comparison to the rest of the shading. And the hair is a bit odd. I think it's because it looks sketchy while the body and wings look so smooth. Also, there's a black bit here that needs moving. OK, not really, just couldn't resist. I had to rebel against your evil commenting rules. ;-)

You're off to a good start. I wish my first few photoshop pieces had been this good. :-/

Oh, my god! My waffle! Oh the humanity!
:icondokuhaku:
hey buddy! thats really freakin fun, my man. I dig on the colors. Gray and angel go together well i think. The design is surreal. Modeled after something else? (meaning the wings I guess... they are bizarre as hell.) You really got into this one! 40 hours... i need to spend 40 hours on something. You must be really pleased with the experience/ knowledge gained from such a run. Besides the fact that its a nice image!
Thanks for being so descriptive about the process. Its helpful to me, and others I am sure. The stance is nice, i really like the fact that it looks metal, not merely gray. You know, I have to do something like this. Its compulsive.

*stabbity* I'll give /you/ a black bit here... or something. Yes ;)

Thanks for the awesome comment none-the-less. I was grumbling at my devmessages because it only listed 3, and I was all "GRR! That art was awesome, and it took me ages - it deserves more than 3 comments!" (Which it does, lets face it (Without being too pompous and whatever all the hateful words are)), but just a couple of comments like this are far superior than 'It's good' and 'Awesome' (Which I've seen good art get, which is a shame)

And I'm starting to ramble, so I shall continue to my 3 points:

1) Gah, I went downstairs and can't remember what I was going to put. Eeeeerm... Oh! Yes, the face being 'rough' - I shall look into it a little and see if I can sort it out a bit.

2) The hair looks sketchy because it /is/ sketchy... I took about 3 hours trying to get the right looking hair, and everything I did looked wank. I even tried some pipes coming from 'offscreen' as though they were interfacing (in a purely non-sexual way) with her, but that sucked too. In the end I 'lost it' and just scribbled out of boredom, but it looked pretty funky and was the best I'd done 'so far', so I left it, scared that if I changed it I'd lose it ;) - Maybe when I've got better at that sort of think I could update it some... but I like the jagged roughness of it. Perhaps I could do some sorta metallic spikes or something :/

3) This isn't my 'first piece' in photoshop... I've had photoshop for ages now, and this was just the first piece that I wanted to 'labour' into. I've recently tried doing something similar too, but it's turned out crap. So I do suck after all! :D

Thanks for your comment anyway, 'tis much appreciated

Insignificance.
:iconrandom-monkey:
the wings weren't modelled after anything, no. I was having a tough time trying to get some decent wing-lookin' things to show up. I had eventually resorted to getting some wings from a swan image, and tracing it... I had started by following the edge around the top, and then did another edge a little below it (not so traced)... When it came to doing the 'feathers' in between I was stumped, so I tried a little 'forcefield' look, which seemed to work. (Either that, or I just liked the idea because it meant I could be lazy)

I had a tough time getting the perspective right on the wing on the right of the image... I think I pulled it off just, but it ain't perfect :/ - *shrug*

Cheers for the comment, :D

Hehe, the detail and lines like on the hands was quite amusingly the easiest thing to do... once I had the main colour in the background I just put a new layer over the top. Selected a brush size of 1 and drew a line in black, 100% opacity. Then did the same line with white, just a little to the left/right (appropriately), then I changed the opacity of the layer so that it looked like a little indent or whatever...

Thanks for the comment, anyway :)
and *gives you wings*

Oh, there's no wing emoticon, so :cuddle: instead

We got a thinker on our hands. Looks like this ones a real "nose for detail" character. Get him!!! *rumble, rumble!

Great for a first proper attempt monkey. Backgrounds are very important as they help set the mood. Some of the anatomy could use a bit a work, but after a while it becomes second nature. Contrast is also very important in a piece, make sure you have strong light and dark.

It's all good man :D just keep practicing and practicing and everything will start making itself.

in the preview i took this to be a render...
i like the nature of the piece - theres a few similar works in my own gallery, angels and machinery... so i guess im kind of predisposed to like this, which i do :p
